Exhibited at the Smithsonian’s ACCelerate Festival in October, 2017, this project follows the model established with the “New Town Remembered: A Virtual Re-Creation” project of employing cutting-edge technologies to capture and preserve a place in time in a manner that informs the local community about the significance of the location as well as meanings that can be drawn from the community’s story. In addition, the New Town model provides an excellent platform to develop education programs that can be used locally and regionally as well as more broadly.
The historic center of Blacksburg, the 16 Squares, as one of Virginia’s first planned communities founded in 1798, is represented at various time periods to capture the sweep of history as it affects this still existing core area of Blacksburg.
The ICAT SEAD Program provided the support to create a portfolio of the historic structures in Blacksburg and educational tools that can enrich the studies of school children and also provide a contextual background though which Virginia and U.S. history can be told.
